I wanted to have a place to record the books I read and see if I can provide a quick summary for anyone interested. I’ve already put in a few entries, but figured I should point it out here since you have to scroll down a bit to see it. Maybe I should add a link up top that points to it. Good idea!

Well, I certainly won’t be calling my good friends over at Com-crap anytime soon, but I will most assuredly getting HBO sometime in the next few years. A few days ago, Variety broke a story revealing HBO bought rights to the “Song of Fire & Ice” series. The currently 4-book series is definitely my favorite fantasy series immediately after Lord of the Rings. This is very cool news!

The author of the books is George R.R. Martin. He started with Game of Thrones in 1996, and is soon to be releasing the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons. In total, seven books are planned, and supposed to be wrapped up in 2011. With each book being nearly 1000 pages, that’s a lot of writing! And for me, that’s a lot of reading!

Martin has taken a different tack in his storytelling than most other authors. The characters are from basically seven royal families, so there are constantly several (and I mean several) threads running in parallel. He’s also kills off major characters. A lot. But, there’s never lack for a new plot, a sudden twist or a new favorite or most-hated character. He is truly a talent.

It will probably be a few years before the show actually makes it to the small screen, but I’m already looking forward to it. You can read more on Martin’s blog as well as the news page on his site.

Thank you George and thank you HBO!!
